In St. Lucie County, community isn’t just a word—it’s a commitment. That commitment is on full display through a long-standing tradition led by the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office, one that continues to uplift and support local youth when they need it most.
A Tradition Rooted in Leadership
Years ago, then-Major David “Bucky” Walters recognized a challenge facing young agricultural students in our community. For many of these students, raising livestock for the county fair represents months—sometimes years—of hard work, responsibility, and personal investment.
But when unexpected livestock losses occur before the fair, it can be devastating—not just financially, but emotionally.
Determined to make a difference, Bucky partnered with local business owners and ranchers to create a support network—one built on compassion, generosity, and a shared belief in the importance of agriculture and youth development.
Continuing the Mission
Today, that tradition lives on.
Through the continued efforts of the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office and its community partners, financial support is provided to students facing these unexpected setbacks—ensuring they still have the opportunity to participate, learn, and grow.
This year, that support was proudly extended to:
- Jacob Cason
- Thomas French Jr.
- Maybree McFarland
Each of these young individuals experienced livestock losses ahead of the County Fair. Thanks to the generosity of this network, they received financial assistance to help offset those losses and continue pursuing their agricultural goals.
